Avoiding “Bali Belly”
If you haven’t traveled to Southeast Asia before, you may be concerned about stomach issues, commonly known as “Bali Belly.” Here are some tips to help you stay healthy:
- Do not drink tap water. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking.
- You can brush your teeth with tap water. This can help your gut acclimate to local bacteria in small doses, potentially reducing the risk of stomach upset.
- Consider avoiding ice if you are particularly sensitive.
- Pack charcoal pills and probiotics to help with digestion and recovery if needed.
- Wash your hands frequently to prevent illness. Bringing hand sanitizer with you is a good idea.
- Most essentials, including medications and toiletries, are readily available at local pharmacies.
Mosquitoes & Malaria
- Malaria is generally not a concern in most tourist areas of Bali. However, if you plan to visit more remote islands, consult your doctor about malaria prevention.
- Bring your preferred mosquito repellent, especially for children. Jessica recommends the brand Soffell, which is widely available in Indonesian shops for under $5 per bottle.
Vaccinations
- Consult your doctor at least 6–8 weeks before your trip for personalized vaccine recommendations.
